Traffic jammed Wellington’s waterfront streets today as people cruised past to look at the biggest ship ever to visit the Capital.
The Cunard cruise liner Queen Mary 2 was berthed at the city’s Aotea Quay from early today for a two-day visit.
The liner was diverted from a planned visit Lyttelton which was devastated by Tuesday’s earthquake.
Queen Mary 2 (at 345 metres) is 50m longer than sister ship Queen Elizabeth, which called in last weekend.
According to Stuff.co.nz, Wellington’s previous longest visitor was the 315m SS France, which berthed at the container terminal in 1974.
The Queen Mary 2 was due to leave for Auckland tomorrow (Sunday).
